Mini excavator digging and levelling for a slab area

Slab, Driveway and Hardstand Preparation

Diggermate provides operated excavation and ground preparation for concrete slabs, driveways, hardstands, parking areas and suitable access tracks. We support residential, commercial, trade and construction jobs that suit the local compact fleet, generally mini excavators, mini loaders and skid steers weighing 3.5 tonnes or less.

Our role is to prepare the ground to the dimensions, levels, depths and base specification supplied by your builder, concreter, engineer or project plan. Equipment, compaction attachments, material handling and disposal options vary by location and are confirmed before booking.

Areas we can help prepare

  • Shed, workshop, patio and small-building slabs
  • Concrete, gravel and road-base driveway preparation
  • Hardstands and parking areas for vehicles, trailers or equipment
  • Private access tracks and defined light-commercial preparation work
  • Side paths, boat or caravan parking areas and other tight-access pads

What site preparation can include

  • Removing unsuitable surface material and excavating to the specified depth
  • Trimming, levelling and shaping the area to the supplied set-out
  • Loading, stockpiling or removing spoil as agreed
  • Spreading road base, gravel or other specified material
  • Compaction with locally available equipment where included in the quote
  • Preparing edges or adjoining areas for the next trade

How the job usually works

  1. Send measurements and photos. Include the suburb, intended use, access width, slopes, site conditions and target dates.
  2. Provide the required specification. Confirm the set-out, finished levels, excavation depth, base material and compaction requirements with the relevant designer or trade.
  3. We confirm equipment and scope. The local operator checks access, machinery, attachments, spoil handling, materials and timing.
  4. We prepare the area. Excavation, shaping, material movement and agreed compaction are completed for handover to the next trade.

Important scope notes

Diggermate’s standard service covers the agreed excavation, material movement and earthworks preparation. Concrete pouring, reinforcing, formwork, paving, engineering, surveying and drainage design are not automatically included. These are completed or specified by the relevant qualified provider unless a local Diggermate has separately confirmed them in writing.

For water-management earthworks, see our drainage excavation and trenching service. The video below shows the broader slab process; Diggermate’s role focuses on the site-preparation stages agreed in your quote.

Below is a breakdown of the machinery we commonly use for slab preparation projects, and how each machine plays a role in getting your site ready for concrete.

Mini Excavator

Mini excavators are ideal for digging and levelling tight access sites where precision matters. They remove soil accurately to the right depth for your slab and help shape the area to match your slab design.

How it helps:

  • Excavate to required slab depth

  • Level and trim edges for consistent footing

  • Works easily in narrow backyards and between fences

2.5T Mini Excavator

For larger pad areas or when you need more power, the 2.5-tonne excavator moves more material quickly and efficiently. It’s great for bigger slab footprints such as driveways or commercial slabs.

How it helps:

  • Speeds up bulk excavation

  • Removes spoil quickly

  • Reaches further across wider slab areas

Compaction Plate / Mini Roller

One of the most important steps before pouring concrete is compaction. Our compaction plates and mini rollers ensure the ground and imported base are locked in firmly so your slab won’t settle or crack.

How it helps:

  • Compacts soil and base layers to design density

  • Reduces future slab movement or cracking

  • Creates a stable platform for your concrete pour

Tipper Truck

Whether it’s hauling away spoil or bringing in road base and crushed rock, tipper trucks make material handling simple and efficient without DIY truck runs.

How it helps:

  • Removes excavated soil and waste

  • Brings in compacted base material

  • Saves time and multiple deliveries

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Depending on the site, specification and local equipment, we can help with excavation, shaping, levelling, spoil handling, base-material spreading and agreed compaction for:

  • Concrete slabs and pads
  • Driveways and parking areas
  • Gravel or road-base hardstands
  • Private access tracks
  • Shed, workshop, patio and side-access areas

The relevant builder, concreter, engineer or designer should provide the required levels, depths and material specification.

You hire us because slab preparation has less room for error than most DIY digging. A rushed or uneven base can create flow-on issues at pour time. We use the right equipment and trained operators to:

  • Work faster than manual labour

  • Reduce rework from incorrect levels or poor prep

  • Improve site safety around excavation and machinery

We handle a range of access and terrain, from tight access suburban sites to larger open blocks. We use tight access equipment across our network, which helps us work in smaller spaces.

Our national guide pricing for wet hire services is $119 per hour.
Our minimum charge is 3 hours plus 1 hour of travel for each job.

Pricing can vary by location, site conditions, and access.

For an accurate quote, please contact your local Diggermate, who can assess your site and confirm availability and rates.

It depends on:

  • Slab size and excavation depth

  • Soil conditions and moisture

  • Access and machinery required

  • Spoil volume and disposal setup
Once you share your slab dimensions and site photos, we’ll give you a realistic time estimate.

Yes. We can work on tight access sites and small suburban blocks.

We excavate and prepare the area as part of the service, then we plan spoil handling based on your site and local options. Spoil removal and disposal can vary by location and scope, so we confirm the approach and what’s included in your quote before we start.

Our operators are experienced in operating their equipment and preparing sites to an agreed scope. Project-specific licences, tickets, inductions and technical requirements can vary. Concrete, engineering and other specialist work remains with the relevant qualified provider.

We cover concrete foundations service through locally owned Diggermate locations across Australia and New Zealand. Coverage and availability varies by area, so check your nearest location.

Booking is straightforward. Tell us your requirements and book online.
To quote accurately, we usually need:

  • Suburb and site access notes (gate width, steps, slopes)

  • Slab size (length/width) and intended use (shed, extension, home, etc.)

  • Photos of the site

  • Spoil plan (on-site stockpile, skip/truck access, removal needed)

  • Preferred dates and any deadlines

Before we arrive:

  • Clear vehicles, furniture, and loose items from the work zone

  • Mark the slab area if you can (or share a sketch/photos so we can confirm)

  • Confirm underground services locations (electric, water, gas, comms)

  • Make sure we can access the site (unlocked gates, pets secured)

  • Confirm where spoil should go (or tell us you need removal)

Many locations operate seven days a week, including weekends.

After-hours availability varies by location, so check with your local Diggermate when you book.

Often, yes. The work can include excavation, shaping, spoil handling, spreading specified base material and compaction where the local equipment allows. The required depth, levels, drainage and material specification should be confirmed before quoting.

Diggermate can prepare suitable private and light-commercial access tracks when the scope fits the local compact fleet. Length, width, slope, ground conditions, drainage, material volumes and access for deliveries all affect suitability and the quote.
