Diggermate Victor Harbor recently made its mark at the Port Elliot Show, an annual event presented by the Southern Agricultural Society Inc. With its location just 900 meters from the showgrounds, Dean, owner of Diggermate Victor Harbor, took the opportunity to showcase its commitment to the community by sponsoring the event and providing some hands-on fun for attendees.
Deep Roots in the Community
Diggermate Victor Harbor isn’t just a business in Port Elliot; it’s an integral part of the community. Dean, the local Diggermate, has strong family ties to the area.
His son, Douglas, attends the primary school next to the showgrounds, while Raven, their friendly Cavoodle, is a daily visitor to the nearby dog park, often greeting other dogs and their owners.
At the Diggermate shop, Raven can usually be found basking in the sun or accompanying Dean on equipment deliveries.
These local connections made sponsoring the Port Elliot Show an easy decision for Diggermate Victor Harbor, in keeping with the regional “shop local” spirit.
A Hands-On Show Experience
The event organisers provided Diggermate Victor Harbor with the perfect spot to set up some of its machines along the oval, allowing showgoers to climb on the machines, play around, and take photos.
Dean’s decision to leave the site open for visitors to explore independently created a relaxed atmosphere where families felt comfortable letting the kids have fun. It wasn’t just the little ones, though—many dads also took the opportunity to hop on the machines. Throughout the weekend, the excavators drew a steady stream of curious attendees, with some perhaps dreaming of future careers in earthmoving.
A Commitment to the Community
Dean of Diggermate Victor Harbor is already planning to sponsor the Port Elliot Show again next year, with plans to reuse the durable signage provided by The Sign House. The positive response at the show also inspired them to consider supporting other local activities, such as the Nippers program at the Port Elliot Surf Club, where his son, Douglas, is an active participant.
Dean shared his love for the area, saying:
I love being part of this small and welcoming community. Even though we’ve only lived in the area for a couple of years, it certainly feels like home, and there’s no place in the world we’d rather be. Plus, there are plenty of other Kiwis in the area to share ‘fush’n’chups’ accents with, which is ‘sweet as.’
