When tackling a landscaping project, digging trenches, or clearing land, mini excavators are the go-to machine for getting the job done efficiently. But the question is: Can anyone rent a mini excavator? The answer is yes! Renting a mini excavator is accessible to most people, but you should know a few things before jumping in.

Dry Hire vs. Wet Hire: What’s the Difference?

  • Dry Hire:

This means you’re renting the mini excavator without an operator. You’ll be responsible for operating the machine yourself, which can save costs if you’re confident in handling the equipment. Most rental companies, including Diggermate, provide user-friendly machines and basic operating instructions to make it easy for DIYers. You can check our YouTube channel for instructional videos: https://www.youtube.com/@Diggermate

Each Diggermate mini excavator comes with 2 buckets and a ripper to tackle different ground conditions and tasks.

Some locations also offer combo deals with tipper trucks, which can be driven with a car licence and can tow mini excavators, providing a complete solution for your project.

  • Wet Hire: If you’re new to operating heavy machinery or have a particularly complex job, wet hire is the way to go. With wet hire, you rent both the machine and a qualified operator. While this option is more expensive, it ensures the job is done quickly and professionally.

How to Choose What’s Best for You

If you’re comfortable operating a machine and have a simple project, go for dry hire. For bigger or tricky jobs, wet hire ensures the work is done safely and efficiently. Most Diggermate locations offer both options, so you can pick what works for you.

Towing Requirements: What You Need to Know

If you plan to tow a mini excavator yourself, it’s important to understand your vehicle’s towing capacity and the weight of the excavator and trailer combination.

What kind of towing capacity does my vehicle need to tow a 1-1.7t mini excavator?

The 1.7t mini excavator comes on one of two trailers:

  • Aluminium trailer with mechanical brakes – total weight of 2t
  • Steel trailer with Bluetooth electric brakes – total weight of 2.4t

Your vehicle must have a towing capacity that exceeds the trailer weight. An electric brake controller inside your vehicle is not required due to the Bluetooth braking system. Both trailers come with a 7-pin flat electrical plug, so ensure your vehicle is compatible.

What kind of towing capacity does my vehicle need to tow a 2.5T excavator?

The 2.5T excavator comes on an aluminium trailer with brakes, with a total weight of 3.4t. Your vehicle must have a towing capacity that exceeds 3.4t and be equipped with electric brakes. Additionally, a brake control system inside your vehicle is required to tow this machine.

If you don’t have a brake control system, some locations may offer a wireless brake control system adaptor, or alternatively, we can deliver the excavator to you. Simply add delivery to your booking and provide your address. The trailer has a 7-pin flat plug, so ensure your vehicle is compatible.
